SCIENCE

The TOP LEVEL REQUIREMENTS for CUBES are motivated mainly by the cases outlined below, where a significant gain in sensitivity and spectral resolution in the ground UV will provide a unique capability for years to come. Although the design is motivated by these cases, we envisage CUBES as a chance to open-up new parameter space at Paranal, with the expectation of a much broader range of scientific applications and with a diverse user community.

Galactic science

Stellar nucleosynthesis, in particular:

    • Beryllium

    • Iron-peak elements

    • Heavy elements

    • CNO abundances

Solar system / Planetary science

    • Searching for water in the asteroid belt

    • Measuring the N2/CO ratio in comets.

Extra galactic science

    • Missing baryonic mass in the high-redshift circumgalactic medium

    • Cosmic UV background
